Castleford learn more on Niall Evalds injury after scans

Castleford interim coach Andy Last says the Tigers will be without full-back Niall Evalds for up to six weeks through injury.

The 29-year-old played in the first three games of the season but he has been dealt a lengthy blow after damaging an ACL joint.

“He had a scan on Tuesday,” said Last. “It’s an ACL joint but the diagnosis is quite positive really. It’ll be four to six weeks.

“He might be able to get back in to training and be considered for selection a little bit sooner than that but it’s a blow for Niall.

“He had a couple of injuries last year and started the season in good form but has picked up another knock. The diagnosis isn’t as bad as first feared so there is a little bit of a positive in there.”

Replacements for Niall Evalds

Last conceded that losing Evalds is a big blow for his side, but says there are players capable of filling the void.

He said: “We’ve got the likes of Jack Broadbent who is a very versatile player who has got great utility value.

“Jack can play anywhere across the backline, whether it be on the wing, centre or full-back. He has got some experience there.

“There’s also Jason Qareqare who is an exceptionally talented young lad who has always come up with big plays when he plays for Castleford Tigers, so he comes in to consideration as well.”

Captain Paul McShane and winger Bureta Faraimo face late fitness checks ahead of their trip to Huddersfield on Friday.

Last added: “We will settle on the team after we’ve done some final checks but we want to give those guys who have had their bumps an opportunity to play.”
