Wakefield Trinity bring in Huddersfield forward on loan
Wakefield Trinity have announced the signing of Huddersfield forward Sam Hewitt on an initial two-week loan deal.
Hewitt, 23, is a product of Huddersfield’s academy and will join Mark Applegarth’s squad on Monday ahead of their fixture with Salford on Sunday, March 19.
He has made 43 appearances for the Giants since his debut in 2018, and adds cover to Wakefield’s forward pack with the likes of Josh Bowden and Kelepi Tanginoa currently sidelined.
The forward is yet to make his first appearances of 2023.
On the move, Hewitt said: “I’m really looking forward to joining Wakefield and getting stuck in.
“Hopefully I can get some good minutes under my belt and add something to the team with my performances on the pitch.”
Wakefield boss on Sam Hewitt addition
Wakefield boss Applegarth added: “I’m really pleased to be able to bring Sam in on loan to bolster our pack over the next few weeks.
“Sam is a young hungry forward who is excited to be linking up with the squad on Monday and ripping in for us.
“I’m looking forward to working with him. I’m sure he’ll make his mark on the team over the next few weeks. I’d also like to thank Huddersfield for allowing Sam to join us.”
“I am sure he will be a huge asset to them”
Huddersfield’s managing director Richard Thewlis commented on the move: “As Ian (Watson, head coach) has alluded to in his weekly press briefings loan opportunities may arise during the course of the year that we feel are beneficial for all concerned and this is one such occasion.
“Sam will gain Super League game time for a couple of weeks with Wakefield. I am sure he will be a huge asset to them, after which we’ll review the situation and see where all parties are.”
Applegarth’s side are still searching for their first win of the season after losing 26-0 at Leeds on Friday night. And they suffered more injuries at Headingley Stadium.
Lewis Murphy has been ruled out of the entire 2023 season due to an ACL injury, and Wakefield will be without full-back Max Jowitt for up to three months.
And now utility back Lee Gaskell is set for weeks on the sidelines with a suspected torn pectoral muscle in their defeat to the Rhinos.
Samisoni Langi will also be unavailable for next weekend’s match at Salford. The centre failed a head injury assessment early in the second half.
