Weston: Leigh can only get better
Leigh forward Dayne Weston says the Centurions will take a lot out of their heavy defeat at the hands of Castleford in their Super League season-opener.
Leigh were beaten 44-16 by the Tigers at the Jungle.
“I suppose at the end of the day you want to be challenged by the top teams and I think cas this year are going to be up the top of the ladder,” Weston said.
“We take a lot out of the game and we can only get better.”
The Centurions matched Castleford in the opening 20 minutes but were then blown away.
“We didn’t help ourselves, you give a side like that a sniff and they take advantage and we did that and it cost ourselves,” Weston admitted.
“Once they got a role on we couldn’t stop them really and it took all energy out of us and we were chasing our tails for the rest of the match.”
“We got a taste of it last year in the Middle 8s against leeds, how tough it was, travelling long distances away.
“A lot of people tell me its a different game playing people away than it is at home so it’s all part of it.
“We’d rather be hustling for competition in the top league than winning by 50 in the second division so it’s just about improving each week and well get used to the speed of each week and improve on that.”
Leigh face Leeds this Friday night at home.
Weston is expecting a tough encounter.
“You can’t underestimate Leeds, only 12 months ago they won everything on offer so they’re going to be a tough side,” the Australian said.
“Every one we play each week is going to be tough and it’s just a matter of us looking after our own back yard and making sure we are ready each and every week.”
