English forward weighing up options after enjoying spells in France

St Gaudens forward David Weetman is attracting interest from several English clubs following the end of their French Elite campaign.

The 24-year-old has recently returned home to England following second spell with St Gaudens in the French domestic competition.

Newcastle-based Weetman, who has previously played for Newcastle, Workington and Midlands, has been tabled offers from a couple of English clubs in the lower leagues.

Speaking to Love Rugby League, Weetman said: “What’s next for me is to have a few weeks of seeing family and friends and resting the body a little bit then see where I will be next rugby-wise.

“Me and my agent have spoke with a few different clubs and offers have been sent over, I just have to weigh up what the best opportunity is for me.

“The goals I have for my next move is to just keep playing consistently and keep pushing myself as much as possible where ever that may be.”

The Geordie has enjoyed two spells in France now with St Gaudens, and is open to going over for a third time in the future.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time playing in the French Elite 1 Championship and learning a different culture, especially now that I’ve been with St Gaudens twice. I’ve made some good relationships over there and some friends for life.

“For me, the French Elite 1 Championship as quite different to the England leagues. In France it is a lot more about throwing the ball about and playing off the cuff. There’s also a bigger difference in the top teams compared to the bottom teams, but there are some very good and experienced players in this league. You just have to look at James Maloney at Lezignan or Jason Clark at Limoux as examples.

“I’d definitely encourage players to go and play in France, it’s a really good experience and a good competition.

“The first time I went out to France I was 21 and in that time I grew up quite a lot whilst I was out out there.

“I’ll never say no to returning as I’m still reasonably young and I’ve really enjoyed playing out here.”
