Ryan Hampshire return date confirmed by Wigan coach

Wigan coach Matt Peet has revealed when new signing Ryan Hampshire will pull on the Cherry and White jersey again.

The 28-year-old has yet to play for the Warriors since he re-joined the club in the off-season due to recovering from an ACL injury he suffered whilst playing for Castleford last June.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel now for Hampshire, who is set to play his first game for the reserves next weekend.

Confirming the news of his return, Wigan coach Matt Peet said: “We’ve got a reserve game in the international weekend against Wakefield, so Ryan will play in that.”

It is welcome news to Wigan and Hampshire, who will pull on the Cherry and White shirt for the first time since re-joining the club on a one-year deal in the off-season, with a further two years in the club’s favour.

The Wakefield-born back brings plenty of utility value to Peet’s side, being able to play half-back, full-back and wing.

Hampshire came through the academy ranks at Wigan, making his first team debut in 2013, the year the Warriors won the double.

The Yorkshireman scored nine tries in 30 appearances for Wigan before going on to have spells with Leigh, Wakefield and Castleford in Super League.

Speaking back in January on his return to Wigan, Hampshire said: “I am delighted to be coming back to Wigan.

“I am a different person from seven years ago and keen to show the Wigan fans my commitment and capabilities.

“I look forward to the opportunity to help Wigan win more trophies and to earning the respect and confidence of my team-mates.”

In total, Hampshire has scored 50 tries and has kicked 153 goals in 159 career appearances, racking up more than 500 points.
