Matt Peet makes Toby King future admission amid open transfer window 

Wigan head coach Matt Peet says he would be keen in exploring the option to retain centre Toby King beyond the current season.

King, 26, made the move to the Warriors ahead of 2023 on a season-long loan from Warrington.

He remains on contract with the Halliwell Jones Stadium side until November 2025, but fell down the pecking order upon the arrival of Daryl Powell, having also found himself out on loan at Huddersfield last season.

The centre has since enjoyed fine form at the DW Stadium, earning his first England call-up by Shaun Wane for the mid-season international against France, winning his first cap. 

Given number three by Peet ahead of the current campaign, King has gone on to be ever-present for Wigan, scoring four tries. 

“He’s made a good start. He settled in really well and is a popular member of the group,” Peet said on King.

“He seems to enjoy the environment. I know that he’s really happy here. 

“It would be great if he could be here beyond this season because we like him, we respect what he brings to the group and I think he’s fitting in as a Wigan player. 

“We’re 10 games in and it’s a great start made by Toby. He’s fit as a fiddle, competes and I was really proud of him at the weekend (against France).”

King says his future is yet to be confirmed as he remains a contracted Warrington player. However, the ex-Ireland international has hinted at his future preference.

He said: “I’m really enjoying it. It’s been class. The boys have been really good with me and we’re getting on the right end of results. 

“I’m just focussing on now really. That’s probably more for Matty and Warrington to work out. I don’t know what will come of it.

“But it’s the May 1 deadline now, which everyone talks about. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m focussing on playing and playing well. 

“There’s lots to be worked out, I’m still contracted at Warrington until 2025. But I’m loving it here now. I’ve had a few chats and that about staying, but I don’t know what will happen with that. 

“I’m just leaving that all down to my agent. I’m not trying to think about it as much, but it is in the back of your mind. It’s exciting at the same time, you’re playing not just for your place in the squad, but for your future.

“I’m loving it. 

“There’s nothing been agreed at the minute, I’m still a loan player from Warrington.

“I really owe it to Wigan, they believed in me last year. I’m just thankful for Wigan for giving me a shot this year and believing in me.”
