Leeds boss addresses speculation over Sam Lisone’s future

Leeds head coach Rohan Smith has addressed the recent speculation linking prop forward Sam Lisone to a return to the NRL for 2024.

Reporting on Wide World of Sports, renowned journalist ‘Moley’ said that it would not be a surprise to see the ex-NRL prop return Down Under following his partner’s move back home.

Georgia Hale, who made the move to England alongside Lisone and joined Lois Forsell’s Leeds ahead of the 2023 Women’s Super League season, will soon return to the Gold Coast Titans for the upcoming NRLW campaign.

Her final game for the Rhinos will be against St Helens at Headingley on May 26 in a double-header, while she reassured that Lisone will remain in Smith’s squad, having signed a two-year deal ahead of the current season.

Reports put questions over Lisone’s future, but Smith has reassured that the 29-year-old prop remains committed to his contract at Headingley Stadium.

“Sam is committed to Leeds,” Smith said. 

“Nothing has changed there. Georgia has got a great opportunity I believe in a growing, expanding competition that is a premier competition for ladies in the world. 

“That’s about as much as I know. But I do know Sam is very committed towards his long-term future at the Rhinos.

“His form has been pretty steady for a good period of time now. He’s certainly had some impact and contributed well amongst a middle unit that has been solid-ish. 

“But it’s something we’re looking for a bit more from that middle unit moving forward and another great opportunity this weekend.”

Smith also confirmed that Australian half-back Aidan Sezer will make his return for Leeds this weekend in the Challenge Cup, while Jack Sinfield will undergo his exams over the next couple of weeks and the club will take a cautious approach with the rising prospect.

The Rhinos host Wigan in the sixth round of the Challenge Cup this Saturday, live on the BBC.

Mason Lino speculation rejected

The Leeds boss also rejected rumours linking interest for Wakefield half-back Mason Lino for next season.

Wakefield boss Mark Applegarth recently stated that Lino remains in the future plans for the club and is a key player, and hopes to extend his stay at Belle Vue beyond 2023.

Samoa international Lino, 29, is currently in his third season with Wakefield in Super League and is off contract at the end of the year.

“I’ve not had a conversation with Mason or his management,” Smith added.

“He’s a good player, I’ve known Mason a long time. But there has been zero communication as far as a contract goes to my knowledge.”
