Mason Lino future confirmed with new contract announced

Mason Lino has secured his future by signing a new three-year contract with Wakefield Trinity until the end of the 2026 campaign.

Lino, 29, is currently in his third season at Belle Vue, having made the switch to Super League from Newcastle Knights ahead of 2021.

The future of the three-time Samoa international has been a topical conversation as of late, with the playmaker having previously been linked with Leeds.

Rhinos boss Rohan Smith shut down those rumours on Thursday, with Lino saying his decision to remain at Wakefield was an easy one to make. 

The Super League strugglers are still without a win in 2023, with the number seven featuring in all 12 rounds so far this campaign.

“I’m really happy to have my future secured,” Lino said. 

“It definitely wasn’t a hard decision for me and this club showed faith in me three years ago when other clubs didn’t, so I want to show some loyalty to them,” said the 29-year-old halfback. 

“What the club are trying to build towards is something I want to be a part of. I enjoy being around the group and we’ve got a great bunch of boys. 

“Whilst I know we’re not where we need to be at the minute, as a group we are working hard and I have the utmost faith that we can turn this season around.” 

It’s a major coup for Wakefield, with the former New Zealand Warriors man also previously linked with Wigan following the retirement of ex-captain Thomas Leuluai.

“To get Mason signed up for the next three years is brilliant news for the club,” said head coach Mpplegarth. 

“He’s been outstanding to work with and he’ll be a vital part of our rebuild moving forward, not only for his playing ability but for who he is as a person. 

“I know Mason is excited to be a massive part in our future and, as a club, we are certainly delighted to get this over the line.”
