Widnes bring in Super League forward on loan following Kyle Amor’s retirement

Widnes Vikings have announced the loan signing of Salford Red Devils forward Andrew Dixon on a short-term loan deal.

The latest addition follows Kyle Amor’s decision to hang up the boots with immediate effect due to injury. 

Dixon, 33, joins John Kear’s side on an initial two-week loan with a wealth of experience behind him.

He has previously featured for St Helens, Leigh, Toronto and Toulouse before returning to Salford for his second stint ahead of the 2023 season under Paul Rowley. 

The back-rower has made three appearances in the current Super League campaign.

He will be in contention for Saturday’s Summer Bash fixture against Swinton at York’s LNER Community Stadium, kicking-off the Championship showcase event. 

Kyle Amor retires due to injury

Four-time Super League winner Amor announced his immediate retirement earlier this week, ending his Widnes stint early.

The Cumbrian-born prop forward stepped down from full-time rugby league to join Kear’s side in the Championship for the 2023 campaign.

He has played in 10 of the club’s 12 games so far this season, but has been forced to retire due to injury, aged 35.

Amor said: “I would like to thank everyone involved at Widnes Vikings for welcoming me into this great club and thank them for their understanding and support.

“Unfortunately, in recent months I have found it incredibly difficult to manage my injuries and meet the demands of playing rugby at this level.

“After much deliberation, I have made the difficult decision to retire from the sport that I love.

“This is a decision that has not come lightly but I feel it is the right thing to do.

“The club is in a great place both on and off the field and I wish the Vikings all the success their with future endeavours.”
