Daryl Powell provides latest on Josh McGuire and why he’s unlikely to play at Magic Weekend

Daryl Powell says Josh McGuire is expected to miss Magic Weekend due to injury as Warrington close the Super League event on Sunday against Hull.

McGuire, 33, is currently under investigation for the use of unacceptable language in the Super League defeat to Leigh in Round 13. 

The ex-NRL loose forward was only making his seventh appearance of the season after serving a long-term ban at the start of his Super League career for a Grade F charge of unacceptable language during pre-season against the Leopards.

Despite the investigation, he was still free to feature against Tony Smith’s Hull this Sunday.

However, it’s a knock to his knee sustained at the Leigh Sports Village last Friday that is likely to rule him out of his first Super League Magic Weekend appearance. 

The action gets underway between Salford and Hull KR at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park from 1:30pm, while Warrington face Hull on Sunday at 4:30pm in the north east.

Josh McGuire unlikely to feature in Newcastle

“Josh McGuire picked up a knock last week,” McGuire told media on Thursday.

“He probably won’t be in the squad. Apart from that, we’re alright. We didn’t come up with too much out of the game.

“He’s disappointed that he can’t play in this game, but it is what it is. Players are picking up injuries all the time and we’ll have to roll with it.”

Referee Chris Kendall was seen to put an incident on report during the game at Leigh Sports Village following a complaint, with an outcome expected early next week.

It has been reported that Josh Charnley made the official complaint, with the Rugby Football League confirming in its disciplinary notes on Monday that the incident has been referred for further investigation

Continuing on McGuire’s investigation, Powell said: “I wasn’t out there, I don’t know what’s gone on.

“Josh is saying he hasn’t said anything and I’ll leave it to the disciplinary panel. 

“It’s a situation I can’t do anything about. I won’t try too much, I’ll just leave it.

“But with Josh being injured this week, and I don’t know what that looks like, they referred it to get further evidence, I don’t know how that’s going I’ve just been focussing on getting the team ready to play this week.”
