Sarginson and Greenwood set to make NRL history

Dan Sarginson and Joe Greenwood are set to secure their own little piece of NRL history this weekend, if they both debut for Gold Coast Titans this weekend.

The Titans play Sydney Roosters at Cbus Super Stadium on Saturday night.

If they both play, then they will be the first pair of English debutants to play in the same game since the NRL’s inception in 1998.

Rugby league historian David Middleton maintains that last English duo to debut for the same club in the same game, in Australia, were Andy Gregory and Steve Hampson, when they played for Illawarra back in 1989.

Mike ‘Stevo’ Stephenson and Bill Ashurst also appeared in the same team for Penrith in 1974, although their personal relationship was reportedly somewhat rocky.

Greenwood only arrived in Australia this week, and Sarginson has been suffereing from kneecap problems which have limited his training.

But Titans coach Neil Henry is expected to pick Sarginson to start at left centre, with Greenwood coming off the bench for a spell.‌

“It’s common knowledge that it’s been a short preparation for a couple of guys, in particular Dan and Jarryd [Hayne],” Henry told Aussie media.

“If Joe can punch out 30 minutes that’d be great and hopefully he can do that.”
