Wakey sneak past Saints
Wakefield secured their first win of the season with a narrow and dramatic 16-12 win against St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
Wakefield had lost their first two Super League games this year and had won just twice in 21 visits to Saints, but their drought is now broken.
A Sam Williams penalty seven minutes in saw Trinity take an early lead on the scoreboard in wet and greasy conditions.
Midway through the first half and Mason Caton-Brown registered the first try of the game with an acrobatic finish in the corner after a neat flicked pass from Scott Grix.
Saints continued to be the masters of their downfall, conceding another penalty which Williams slotted between the sticks to keep the scoreboard ticking in Trinity’s favour.
The hosts finally sprung into life with less than five minutes remaining, Ryan Morgan powering over after a mazy run from Adam Swift on the opposite side.
Mark Percival brought Saints back to within two points in the 48th minute after Tommy Makinson’s raking pass out wide.
Theo Fages put Percival in for his in eight minutes which saw Saints take the lead for the first time in the match.
Just as Saints looked to be holding on for the win, a late penalty try from Jacob Miller ensured Wakefield would be going home with all two points.
Miller was held back from scoring and the video referee awarded the score.
It was a bitter blow for St Helens but just desserts for Wakefield who had little luck against Hull FC and Huddersfield in the first two rounds.
