Wigan Warriors young gun enjoying first team experience as he praises ‘massive’ loan spells
Wigan Warriors youngster Harvie Hill is soaking up every minute of first team action and is hungry to get more game time under his belt.
The 19-year-old prop made his first team debut for the Warriors last season and has made six appearances already this year.
Hill impressed in last Sunday’s 14-12 win over Warrington the Challenge Cup quarter-final and is enjoying the ride with Matt Peet’s first team.
He said: “It’s been massive for me lately getting that experience from the older boys and learning from them and just getting used to the pace of the game and the physicality of bigger bodies.
“I’ve still got a long way to go so I will just keep practicing and keep learning my game and hopefully improve.
“Hopefully I can get more game time, get better in myself and more comfortable.”
Loan spells prove beneficial for Wigan Warriors starlet
Hill has enjoyed two loan stints in the Championship this season, playing four games for London Broncos and two for Toulouse.
The Cumbrian prop added: “The loan games were massive for me, helping me with games getting faster and more physicality.
“Going from academy to the Championship is a big difference and then obviously stepping up again (to Wigan first team).
“I would say it (the loans) was just good for me to get used to playing for different people. It helps me get used to a faster game and bigger bodies.”
So what are his goals for the rest of 2023?
“Probably just more game time and training hard,” Hill continued.
“I’ve got a lot of stuff I need to work on so hopefully I can keep working on stuff and hopefully get more game time.”
Hill is drawing inspiration from his dad Howard, who used to play professionally for Whitehaven and Oldham.
Harvie added: “I travelled all around the country watching him when I was younger when he was at Whitehaven, obviously he’s someone I look up to.”
Hill could make his eighth appearance for the Warriors when they make the short trip to Salford on Sunday afternoon, 3pm kick-off.
