Brad Schneider transfer: Hull KR coach Willie Peters explains interesting Canberra Raiders recall option

Hull KR coach Willie Peters has explained the recall option that NRL side Canberra Raiders have on the club’s new signing of half-back Brad Schneider.

Super League club Hull KR have signed half-back Schneider on a permanent deal for the remainder of the season from Canberra.

Although it isn’t a loan deal, there is a recall option should the Raiders suffer a long-term injury to one of their half-backs.

Explaining the recall option, Hull KR coach Willie Peters said: “My understanding is the Raiders halves – touch wood they don’t – but if they have like a four-week plus injury then they can recall Brad back at any time.

“If it’s a minor one, then my understanding is that he stays here. Obviously I’m hoping that everyone stays fit and is playing well so that Brad can stay with us.

“It’s not a loan deal, but it’s a deal where the agreement was that they can take him back.

“They see Brad as that next half (to the regular playmakers). Naturally if it was a couple of weeks injury, they would move players around and make it work that way but they see Brad, if it was a longer term injury to one of their halves, he’s the next half in line. It would need to be a four-week injury.”

The 22-year-old half-back has made 12 appearances for the Raiders since making his NRL debut in 2021.

Schneider was born and raised in Australia and is of German heritage. He has represented Germany on the international stage in rugby league, winning five caps.

Peters believes Schneider will add competition for places in his side.

The Robins boss said: “He’s young, he’s 22, but what I do know about him is that he’s got a good running game and a very solid kicking game.

“At our club we’ve got all left footed kickers, we don’t have any right footed kickers other than Matt Parcell out of nine. He’s got a good right foot on him and he’s a good defender so they are the three strengths he’s got.

“From speaking to Brad and from all reports, he’s a very good person and that’s what we want to have.

“Where we are at, at this stage of the year, we want good people at the club and people that are going to fit into our culture and I’ve no doubt that he’ll do that.”

Schneider will arrive in the UK later this week ahead of making a potential debut in next Friday’s game against Leeds.
