Wales Wheelchair squad confirm World Cup entry

The Wales Wheelchair Rugby League team will be taking its place at the World Cup this year, after some concern over finances.

The tournament, which is set to be staged in France in July 2017, should feature six teams in total, and the players could be away for a week.

Fundraising for the tournament has now begun in earnest in Wales.

Wales are also competing in this year’s Celtic Cup at The Peak, Stirling, Scotland, where they will play against the host nation and Ireland and look to defend their title.

Again, all players and coaches must find their own funding to play in the tournament.

Wales Wheelchair Rugby League team manager Mark Andrew Jones has urged people to back the Wales squad with whatever help they can muster.

“We are holding our final training session before the Celtic Cup this Sunday between 1pm and 5pm at Deeside Leisure Centre,” he said.

“This is the players’ last chance to make the Celtic Cup squad and we’re open to any potential new players.

“We’ll be holding training sessions again in May and June prior to the World Cup. We will keep these as open training camps too, in order to attract as many players as possible.

“It’s been a tough few months as we decided whether we were able to go to France but after firm commitments from eight players and three staff, we were able to confirm our participation.

“Finance remains an issue and we will continue to try and fundraise so if there’s anyone who wants to sponsor the only Welsh RL international side to have ever beaten Australia, please get in touch.”
