Off the Record: Rugby League Rumour and Gossip #80
Gossip, whispers and intrigue from the big wide world of rugby league.
St Helens coach
There doesn’t seem to be a major rush for St Helens to find a new coach, and reports confirm that they may even stick with their interim appointments until the season’s end. Such was the lack of immediate contenders that no bookmakers are offering markets, with the exception of a couple of local shops. Perhaps it’s a sign that there just isn’t the high calibre of coaches kicking around as there has been in the past, which is why so many rookie coaches have had their chance in Super League in recent years.
Toovey’s visa
One name mentioned in passing for the Saints job is Bradford “coach” Geoff Toovey. He still hasn’t taken charge at the Bulls due to visa issues, and no one appears to have a clue just when he is likely to get one. The club themselves don’t have a timescale and so Leigh Beattie may have a job for a while longer yet, and who knows maybe even permanently. News of Misi Taulapapa’s visa coming through for Featherstone will have pricked up the interest of those at Odsal.
Reserve grade
One of the hot topics of yet another restructure is that of the reserves set up. Ironically, it seems that proposals put down by players themselves some four years ago may well finally be being heard. Whatever happens, there is bound to be movement below first grade, and the recent wording around Under 21s and the salary cap may hint at what is to come.
Stream dream
It’s been a typically negative response to news that England v Samoa will be live streamed online behind a paywall. It wasn’t a unanimous decision to do so, but a clear sign that the RFL are seriously considering the implications that live streaming may have on future broadcast deals. The biggest problem? Being tied up to 2021, having thrown in the online rights quite hastily as part of the last deal.
Chisholm chat
It seems that Dane Chisholm is on the move, and despite the best efforts of former team mates, it doesn’t seem to be an upwards move to Super League. The smart money has the Australian making a return to Bradford.
