Huddersfield Giants face nervous wait on injured duo as Ian Watson beams over ‘great result’

Huddersfield Giants will wait to find out more on the injuries sustained by Jermaine McGillvary and Luke Yates in their win over Hull FC.

The Giants won their third game in a row on Thursday night as they defeated Hull FC 19-12 in a televised match at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The win came at a cost though, with former England winger McGillvary and club captain Yates picking up injuries.

“Jermaine looks like he’s done his hamstring, which isn’t great,” Watson said in his post-match press conference. “Hopefully we’ve caught it and it’s not as bad as we think.

“Luke, his ankle looks pretty swollen. Everyone thought it was his head, but it was his ankle.”

The Giants’ third win on the spin sees them just four points away from the top six, but Watson wants his side just to focus on one game at a time rather than even thinking about the play-offs just yet.

“We’re just focusing week by week,” Watson added.

“We have to look at every single game coming up. It will be no different for Castleford next week. I’ve always had trust in the group.”

The Giants claimed the two points against Hull thanks to tries from McGillvary, Tui Lolohea and Chris McQueen as well as three goals and a drop goal from Olly Russell.

“It was a gritty one,” Watson added.

“Both teams were a bit nervous, or looked nervous. The start of the game was really intense. A few weeks back we would have lost that game, but the grit we showed was outstanding.

“Both teams were desperate to get the win, we stuck in it to get the win. It was a great result. We had to adapt.

“We spoke at half-time because there was a couple of things they were doing on the edges to get one-on-ones.”
