Matt Peet ‘really happy’ with Wigan Warriors response to Challenge Cup heartache: ‘It was important we responded the right way’

Wigan Warriors coach Matt Peet said he was ‘really happy’ with his side’s response to their Challenge Cup semi-final defeat after they beat Leigh Leopards.

The Warriors suffered an agonising golden point extra-time defeat to Hull KR in the Challenge Cup semi-finals – but returned to winning ways by easing past neighbours Leigh 44-18 at the DW Stadium.

Lebanon international Abbas Miski scored a hat-trick, with Australian speedster Bevan French grabbing a brace.

Toby King, Liam Marshall and debutant Tyler Dupree also got on the scoresheet for the Warriors.

Speaking after the game, Peet said: “Really happy with that after what has been a really difficult week.

“It was important we responded the right way and I think the lads managed to channel their frustration in the right way and turned it into energy.

“I thought we played full of energy. Even in the first half when we had to defend the goal-line for extended periods I thought we were excellent.

“I am disappointed we conceded 18 points, because I think the way we defended we should not be letting those points in.

“There were a couple of sloppy tries in there that we have to amend, but, on the whole, I am very pleased with our commitment and some of our execution. You can see what we are trying to build.”

England international prop Dupree made his debut for Wigan since making the midweek switch from Salford on a four-year deal.

Peet said: “It was an ideal debut for him. He came on at an important time as well, the game was very much in the balance and I thought him and Patrick (Mago) during that middle spell got us rolling forward.

“He worked hard defensively as well. It is a positive when you have front rowers who can dent the line. He is certainly going to do that.”
