Exclusive: Leigh Leopards close to re-signing star on long-term deal to fend off NRL interest
Leigh Leopards are on the verge of convincing Lachlan Lam to commit his long-term future to the club, Love Rugby League can reveal.
Lam has been one of the standout half-backs in Super League this season, and has been influential in the Leopards’ remarkable 2023 campaign.
However, his existing deal expires at the end of the current campaign, and interest in the 25-year-old has been building.
Clubs in England and Australia have identified Lam as a potential player of interest, with a number of NRL sides monitoring his form closely. However, Love Rugby League understands Leigh and Lam are on the verge of putting that speculation to bed with a new contract set to be signed off.
Lachlan Lam set to commit his future to Leigh Leopards
The news will come as a major boost for Leigh less than a fortnight out from their first Challenge Cup final appearance in over 50 years, with speculation over Lam’s future now set to be put to bed once and for all in the coming days.
Lam has been an ever-present so far in 2023, playing in all 23 of Leigh’s matches this season.
The Leopards head coach and father of the half-back, Adrian Lam, admitted recently they were hopeful they could convince Lam to remain at the club.
“That’s ongoing, so hopefully there will be some news about that in the near future,” he said of his son’s future.
“Not only him, but a few other players at the club, we’ve got to make sure we finalise (deals) and there’s players from the outside that we are trying to bring in that we’ve got to finalise, so it’s ongoing. That’s Chris Chester’s job, so he’s doing a good job with all of that.”
And those hopes now look set to become a reality with it understood a deal is close to being signed off, and Lam will continue at the Leigh Sports Village beyond this season.
