Former Huddersfield Giants playmaker on the move after landing long-term NRL deal

Former Huddersfield Giants half-back Jack Cogger has signed a three-year contract with NRL side Newcastle Knights from 2024.

The 25-year-old will join the the Knights ahead of next season from reigning NRL champions Penrith Panthers.

Cogger linked up with the Panthers ahead of this season after spending two seasons in Super League with Huddersfield.

The Australian playmaker made 27 appearances for Ian Watson’s side over two seasons, including their Challenge Cup final defeat to Wigan Warriors at Tottenham last year.

Cogger will return to the Knights in 2024 – the club of whom he made his NRL debut for back in 2016.

The New South Wales-born half-back or hooker played 20 games for Newcastle before moving to Canterbury Bulldogs in 2019.

He played 22 games across two seasons for the Bulldogs before heading to Super League with Huddersfield in 2021.

Knights director of football Peter Parr believes Cogger will prove to be a valuable addition to the NRL club.

Parr said: “Jack has been involved in many different experiences throughout his career, including an overseas stint.

“Those learnings, plus the skills he has developed along the way, has us believing his best football will occur in the coming years.

“Jack has the skill, tenacity and game management to make a great impact at the Knights.”

Elsewhere in the NRL: Jake Clifford to return to North Queensland Cowboys

North Queensland Cowboys have confirmed the signing of Hull FC star Jake Clifford on a one-year deal from 2024.

The 25-year-old has spent this season in Super League with Hull FC, scoring six tries and kicking 46 goals in 20 appearances for Tony Smith’s side.

Cowboys general manager of football Michael Luck said: “With Ben Hampton leaving our squad in 2024 we were searching for a half with NRL experience who could back-up Chad Townsend and Tom Dearden as well as help to mentor Tom Duffy.

“It came to our attention Jake potentially had an interest in coming back to the NRL.

“We had some discussions with Jake and his agent and we were thrilled to be able to come to terms in quick time.

“He was playing some of the best football of his career under Todd before he left in 2021 and we’re excited about what he can bring to our squad in terms of experience and competition for spots.

“We also know he is a great cultural fit and it’s always a bonus to be able to bring a North Queensland boy home.”
