Wigan Warriors: Matt Peet provides fitness update on Patrick Mago amid injury rumours; Brad O’Neill latest
Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has provided an injury update on duo Patrick Mago and Brad O’Neill, with the pair named in the 21-man squad to face Salford.
The Wigan boss confirmed that out-of-contract forward Mago, 28, rolled his ankle in the latter stages during the win in Perpignan but will be given every chance to make fitness for Friday’s Super League home clash.
It was also believed that hooker O’Neill, 21, had suffered suspected broken ribs following an incident involving club legend and Catalans full-back Sam Tomkins.
However, Peet confirmed that scans came back clean for the in-form youngster, who is enjoying a breakthrough year in 2023 with 22 appearances to date.
Former England international Tomkins, who will retire at the end of the year, was charged with a Grade B for raising the knee but escaped a ban.
The Warriors also successfully overturned a one-match suspension handed to Kaide Ellis, who was hit with a Grade B dangerous contact by the match review panel on Monday.
On winning the appeal, Peet commented: “It becomes a relief because I was surprised to get the call when we landed on Monday, having looked at the contact, you can understand why it was brought up. But in a game that was pretty physical and ferocious, I didn’t think that’s what we’d be talking about.
“We had a chance to argue our case and the process came to what we believed to be the right decision.”

Former NRL man Mago has enjoyed some of his finest form in recent weeks, slightly increasing his average gain and recording eight busts against Steve McNamara’s squad, including a powerful 20 metre charge.
Meanwhile, England international Tyler Dupree will miss the Round 24 fixture against his former club after failing his head injury assessment.
Providing the latest on injuries, Peet said: “Obviously now we’ve got Kaide [Ellis] back and we’re in pretty good health.
“Patrick [Mago] rolled his ankle towards the end the game. He’s trained OK today there and we’ll make a decision.
“For such a physical game, we came out alright. Tyler was so late in the game and Paddy, too.
“Brad [O’Neill] came through the scans with a clean bill of health. He’s trained as well. It was just a bang.”
