Saints’ stalwart proud of milestones
Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook says he’s proud to have reached two career milestones over the past couple of weeks.
The 31-year-old made his 200th appearance for St Helens in their recent defeat at Castleford and broke through the 300 game barrier for his career during Friday’s victory over Widnes.
“It’s a great achievement for myself playing 200 games for a prestigious club like St Helens – it’s an honour to play that many games for them,” he said.
“It’s great to get the 300 games all up as well – the body’s still kicking and hopefully I can carry on for another couple.
“Scoring at Cas was good, but the result wasn’t the best. We should have won that – we were a bit filthy on ourselves for that. I didn’t get over for a try against Widnes, but I’m chuffed that we won on my 300th.”
Saints’ 26-10 victory over Widnes moved them up to sixth in the table and with Friday’s game in hand against Huddersfield to come, McCarthy-Scarsbrook hasn’t ruled out climbing even higher.
“If we can make a bigger gap and close the gap on the ones above us then that’s what we want,” he added.
“It’s going to be tough but we know that we can go over there and win. I think we’ve got good cohesion at the minute and I think we’re playing to our strengths.
“We can’t take things for granted – we just have to build every week and hopefully we can get more wins than losses.”
While McCarthy-Scarsbrook is focused on the rest of the season with Saints, away from rugby league he is a big Millwall FC supporter.
The recent terror incident on London Bridge saw one of the club’s fans, Roy Larner, attempt to single-handedly fight off the three attackers unarmed, resulting in him being stabbed eight times.
McCarthy-Scarsbrook paid tribute to the 47-year-old’s bravery.
“I think that’s how we’re bred really – we’re all chirpy chappies. It takes some sort of guts to stand up to people holding knives and wielding them ready to cut someone, but utmost respect for the man – he put his body on the line.
“I don’t know him, but if I saw him at a game when I pop down then I’d probably buy him a pint. He deserves one at least.”
