Wane desperate for Wembley return

Shaun Wane says this weekend’s Challenge Cup quarter-final tie between Warrington and Wigan is a vitally important game for both clubs.

The Warriors are currently seventh in the Super League table, while Wire are languishing down in tenth place and Wane admitted neither side can afford to lose on Saturday.

“We’re playing well in spells, but we’re just not consistent,” said Wane. “We’re defending well in sets but having one play off, so it’s just mainly a concentration thing with us.

“Tony (Smith) has his own problems that he needs to fix, but it all adds to making the game a really important one for both teams.”

Victory on Saturday would put Wigan one game away from their first Wembley visit since 2013 and Wane insists that the national stadium is the right venue for the final despite recent suggestions that it could be relocated in the future.

“The affinity that Wigan has with Wembley and going down to London for the weekend is massive,” he added.

“I’ve shown them some clips on past Wembley games and there’s no question they understand the importance of this game.

“I love it at Wembley. I’ve been there countless times. I’m proud to be English and I love our capital. I had an unbelievable experience going down there as a player and it’s the same as a coach.”
