Toovey looks for the positives after defeat

Bradford boss Geoff Toovey refused to be downhearted despite the Bulls’ 23-16 defeat at Batley on Sunday.

The match was tied at 16-16 with five minutes to play, but the home side secured the points courtesy of David Scott’s second try of the game.

“It was a close game and it could have gone either way, but it just got away from us due to a couple of soft tries near the end of the match and then the last one was a 70 metre try that clinched it for them,” Toovey told the club’s official website.

“It could have gone either way I thought. The penalty count didn’t help – I thought that we were done pretty harshly by that, but that’s the way it goes.

“I thought that we were the fitter team and we should run out as victors even though we were running up hill in that second half.

“We just had to stay in there and again I thought we had built a good amount of pressure, but let Batley off too easily and obviously they scored that length of the field try against the run of play.

“I thought last week we played well against Hull KR but this week we were off our game, so hopefully next week we will be back on our game. If we are true to our form we will play some good football.

“We can play some football but again it is just about being consistent. The team is young and they come up with the wrong decisions at times and against a good Batley side they will make you pay.

“It is hard, but I think that the fans had a good turnout and keep us striving hard to impress them and keep their hopes up, that’s what we’ll do next week.

“Hopefully a great home crowd will turn up next week and we can finish off the regular season with a win.

“We know where we need to fix up, especially on the tackle front. It is not a hard thing for us to fix up and I think we need to repair this attitude before next week.”
