Oldham snap up Rasool

Danny Rasool, now nearing 22, has turned back the clock to join Roughyeds on a one-year contract after two seasons with Salford under-19s and another two with Warrington Wolves reserves.

For the last ten games of last season he was out on loan to Workington Town.

Said Oldham chairman Chris Hamilton: “Danny has loads of potential and we think we can harness it in League 1.

“We know him well from the last time he was here. Aged 21, he’s still in his infancy as a fully-fledged League player and we look forward to working with him again.”

A centre or second-row forward, he started playing the game as a 14-year-old at Warrington amateur side Crosfields.

By the time he was 17 he was playing in a Roughyeds reserve side coached by Phil Costin and doing enough to earn a senior side training call-up under Scott Naylor, who was in his first year at Oldham.

Despite his youth, he also won selection in a first-team squad that played Leigh Centurions reserves in a pre-season game.

He said: “I was doing okay at Whitebank, but I was very young so it was agreed that I should go to Salford, who back then had a dual-reg agreement with Oldham.

“I played for their under-19s who at that time were coached by Pete Carey (now Naylor’s No 2 at Oldham).

“From there I moved on to Warrington reserves and then towards the back end of last season I went out on loan to Workington, where I picked up invaluable experience of League 1 rugby.

“When I found out Scott and Pete wanted to take me back to Oldham I was really excited at the prospect. I couldn’t wait, to be honest, so it all went through pretty quickly.

“I know quite a few of the Oldham boys so I should soon feel pretty much at home.”

He becomes Roughyeds’ third new signing, following those of Halifax’s young prop Luke Nelmes and Whitehaven’s former Rochdale half-back Paul Crook, a goalkicking points machine who holds the Hornets’ all-time record for most points in a career.
