Sam Powell: Warrington Wolves move confirmed with Wigan Warriors hooker becoming Sam Burgess’ eighth addition
Warrington Wolves have swooped to sign three-time Super League Grand Final winner Sam Powell from reigning champions Wigan Warriors.
Penning a two-year-deal with the Wolves, the hooker departs hometown club Wigan 11 years on from his senior debut having made 273 appearances for the Cherry and Whites.
Love Rugby League exclusively revealed that Powell was a wanted man back in August, with multiple Super League clubs chasing his signature ahead of the 2024 season.
And after the Warriors’ Grand Final win over Catalans Dragons at Old Trafford this month, in another exclusive interview, the 31-year-old admitted he wasn’t sure if that would be his last game donning their shirt.
It’s proven that was the case, with his next destination now confirmed as Warrington, becoming Sam Burgess’ eighth addition ahead of 2024 having taken charge at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Warrington Wolves confirm signing of Sam Powell from Wigan Warriors on two-year deal
Powell pens a deal with the Wire until the end of 2025, with the only clubs other than Wigan he’s represented to date in his career South Wales Scorpions and Workington Town, both of those on dual registration as a youngster.
The former England Knights international told Warrington’s club website: “It’s a massive change for me. As soon as Sam [Burgess] got in contact and said Warrington were interested, I was excited about the opportunity.
“I know it’s going to be a big challenge. The quality of the squad at Warrington, and to work under Sam, is something I think is special.
“I’m looking to bring my experience and leadership to the squad and help to guide the team when I’m on the field. Whenever I’ve played against Warrington in the past, it’s always been a great atmosphere under the lights on a Friday night.
“To be a part of that each week now is something I’m really excited about. I can’t wait to meet everyone and get started.”
Wire chiefs Sam Burgess & Gary Chambers hail latest recruit Sam Powell
The stalwart moves on from Wigan where competition for that hooking role will be heightened next year. Former Leeds Rhinos star Kruise Leeming has been recruited by Matt Peet from the NRL, while young gun Brad O’Neill has been tied down with a new deal.
With their new recruit also able to slot into the halves if required, Warrington boss Burgess is excited about what Powell can bring to Cheshire.
Burgess said: “Sam brings great depth to our squad and is a proven winner. His leadership will be great for the players and the club over the next two seasons.”
Director of Rugby Gary Chambers meanwhile added: “Sam brings a wealth of experience with him to the club. He’s a quality individual who will assist in driving standards.
“To have a player who has achieved what he has in the game, and who was held in such high esteem at Wigan, can only prove beneficial to us at the Wolves.”
