Leeds Rhinos forward granted early release from contract via mutual agreement

Leeds Rhinos forward Leon Ruan has been released from his contract by mutual agreement so he can pursue other playing opportunities.

The 21-year-old joined the Rhinos on a three-year deal from Doncaster ahead of the 2023 campaign, meaning he departs AMT Headingley one year before his contract was due to expire.

Ruan made 11 appearances in total for Leeds, whilst he spent time on loan with Hull FC, Halifax Panthers and Doncaster during the 2024 season.

The Rhinos say Ruan has been released via mutual agreement to ‘enable him to look at new options for next season’.

Rhinos sporting director Ian Blease said: “I would like to thank Leon for all his efforts whilst at the Rhinos.

“We have come to an agreement so Leon can explore his options for next season and beyond and we wish him all the best.”

Ruan made the last of his 11 appearances for the Rhinos in a defeat against Catalans Dragons back in May, with the youngster then going on to play four games for Hull FC on loan in the second half of the season.

After progressing through the academy ranks at Wakefield Trinity, Ruan started his professional career with Doncaster in 2022, making 23 appearances for the Dons that season as he was nominated for League 1’s Young Player of the Year award.

Ruan made a try-scoring debut for Leeds against Wakefield in 2023 and also spent time on loan at neighbours Bradford Bulls during his two years at AMT Headingley.

His next destination has yet to be confirmed.
