Albert brothers depart PNG for Widnes “representing Kato”

Wellington Albert and brother Stanton have departed Papua New Guinea to head to Widnes.

Wellington’s departure was delayed following the tragic death of Kumuls team-mate Kato Ottio last week, while Stanton was announced as a new signing by the Vikings last week.

Speaking to Loop PNG, Stanton said: “This is a new chapter for us. I’m very excited about this. Playing with Wellington in the same team is nothing new. It’s normal to us. We always encourage and motivate each other to do better at every game.

“We were all so shocked when Kato passed away. We won’t forget him. We will play representing the country and representing Kato as well.”

The pair are the latest Papua New Guinea internationals contracted to Super League clubs – following the likes of Garry Lo (Castleford), David Mead and Paul Aiton (both Catalans).

Widnes face Catalans in their Super League opener on February 4, which could be a debut for both Albert brothers as the Vikings don’t have any more pre-season friendlies scheduled.

The Vikings’ high-profile crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for Ottio’s family has already passed the £15,000 mark, including money raised at the friendly victory over Whitehaven on Friday.
