Huddersfield hold trials for women’s team

Huddersfield Giants have announced plans to create a women’s team to go into the Women’s Super League.

They held trials last week (January 13) at The Zone and are holding a further trial session on January 27.

Huddersfield Giants Community plan to increase women and girls Rugby League participation in the local area through an Under-19s team for 2018, with a goal of producing a Women’s Super League team in 2019.

There will be an increased focus upon women’s Rugby League this year through the introduction of programmes and initiatives suitable for girls aged 11-19.

Initiatives to be introduced will include further Sky Try taster sessions in local schools and community clubs, added on to the previous three years of Sky Try delivery, a Girls England Talent Pathway Programme, Touch Rugby League festivals and the introduction of a Huddersfield Giants Girls Under-19s team.

Steve Stead, Giants Under-19s Girls coach, said: “This is an amazing opportunity.

“The women and girls’ game is growing and we are thrilled to be a founding member of the Women’s Super League.

“The introduction of an Under-19s team for 2018 will hopefully bridge a gap between youth and open age girl’s Rugby League and provide a platform to develop and gain experience before entering the Super League.

“Our work with community teams to increase participation is imperative to the success of this project and we will be looking to create links with clubs to ensure the sustainability of women and girls Rugby League in Huddersfield and Kirklees.”

The next open access trial date for the Giants Under-19s Girls team is at The Zone (St Andrews Road, Huddersfield, HD1 6PT) on Saturday 27 January, 1pm-3pm.
