Championship round-up: Round 1
The excitement of the Betfred Championship this year just seems to grow and grow.
Toronto Wolfpack issued a big statement of intent as they came from 12-0 down to beat title rivals Leigh Centurions 34-12at the Leigh Sports Village.
The Centurions made a big impact at the start of the game, going 12-0 up thanks to tries from Harrison Hansen and Matty Dawson-Jones inside the first 10 minutes.
However, the Wolfpack went on to score six unanswered tries through Adam Sidlow, Liam Kay (3), Cory Paterson and Ryan Brierley to claim a huge victory.
Dewsbury Rams started their season in good fashion with a narrow 20-18 victory over a tough Sheffield Eagles outfit.
Tries from James Glover, Rob Worrincy and Dom Speakman put the Rams into a 14-0 advantage before the Eagles scored three tries through Mark Offerdahl, Joshua Toole and Shaun Pick to go into an 18-14 lead.
Dale Morton put Dewsbury back in front on the hour mark and Paul Sykes’ conversion sealed the victory for the Rams.
Featherstone Rovers, who are expected to compete with Leigh and Toronto for the title this year, beat Halifax 20-4 in a West Yorkshire derby at The LD Nutrition Stadium.
Rovers’ tries came from Luke Briscoe, Shaun Robinson, Martyn Ridyard and Anthony Thackeray while Ben Heaton scored Fax’s only try.
Full-time outfit Toulouse Olympique eased past Swinton Lions 46-14 in France.
On the scoresheet for the French side were William Barthau, Tony Maurel (2), Rhys Curran, Paul Marcon, Stan Robin, Gavin Marguerite, Bastian Ader and Mark Kheirallah.
Kyle Shelford and Mike Butt crossed the whitewash for the Lions.
London Broncos showed that they are also a force to be reckoned with this year as they thrashed newly-promoted Barrow Raiders 56-12 at the Ealing Trailfinders Sports Club.
Danny Meadows scored the first try, with the 18-year-old going on to pick up the man of the match award. Rhys Williams, Daniel Harrison, Kieran Dixon, Eddie Battye, Mark Ioane and James Cunningham also scored for the Broncos.
Shaun Dallimore and James Fieldhouse crossed for the Raiders.
The first round game between Rochdale Hornets and Batley Bulldogs was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at the Crown Oil Arena.
