Round 5: Super League Team of the Week
There were several impressive individual performers in round five of the Betfred Super League.
Sam Tomkins (Wigan Warriors)
The 28-year-old has been top class for Wigan so far this year. Having a full pre-season under his belt seems to have done him the world of good. He was a constant threat to Wakefield on Sunday. He made four assists, yes, four! Tomkins also kicked four goals in a classy display.
Ben Jones-Bishop (Wakefield Trinity)
The 29-year-old has gone under the radar in recent years but is a great winger to watch. He scored two sublime tries against Wigan and bust four tackles. Jones-Bishop made 126 metres from 16 carries and will no doubt be a big player for Trinity this season.
Jake Webster (Castleford Tigers)
The 34-year-old is a great option to have for Castleford at centre. His bulky frame means he carries the ball like a back-rower but it was his defensive work that was most impressive against Salford. He made 30 tackles, with four of them being from marker position.
Mark Percival (St Helens)
The 23-year-old scored a hat-trick as St Helens comfortably beat Warrington Wolves on Friday night. Percival also got an assist and bust nine tackles from 12 carries. He worked hard in defence, too, making 17 tackles.
Joe Burgess (Wigan Warriors)
The 23-year-old has been in and out of Shaun Wane’s Wigan side this season due to the impressive form of youngsters Tom Davies and Liam Marshall. He scored a hat-trick to help Wigan beat Wakefield and it will be a big confidence booster for him.
Danny Richardson (St Helens)
The 21-year-old is going to be a real star, isn’t he? Richardson is keeping veteran half-back Matty Smith out of the Saints side at the minute due to his stellar displays. He scored a try and troubled Warrington with his superb kicking game. He also kicked five goals, racking up 14 points for Saints.
Danny Brough (Huddersfield Giants)
The Scotland captain had his best game for Huddersfield for some time on Sunday as Huddersfield beat Widnes. He kicked the Vikings to death and also kicked six goals and grabbed an assist. Brough didn’t shy away from his defensive work either, with him making 17 tackles.
Luke Thompson (St Helens)
The 22-year-old has been one of the standout forwards of 2018 so far. He did big minutes for the Saints at Warrington and made 145 metres from 21 drives while also making 24 tackles – remarkable figures for a front-rower.
James Roby (St Helens)
The England star is consistently brilliant. Has he ever had a bad game? He may be 32 but is showing no signs of slowing down just yet. Roby scored a try on Friday and made 36 tackles. He also gained 128 metres from 16 carries.
Chris Green (Hull FC)
The 28-year-old worked very hard for FC in their loss at Leeds. He mixed it up with Rhinos’ big pack and made 16 tackles while at prop and made 83 metres from 11 drives.
Jamie Jones-Buchanan (Leeds Rhinos)
The 36-year-old looks like he could play for another five years at the minute! He is still fit as a fiddle and is another player who is always reliable. He made a whopping 44 tackles in Leeds’ win against Hull FC while also making 79 metres from 10 drives.
Dean Hadley (Hull FC)
The 25-year-old has been like a new signing for the Black and Whites this year. He was unlucky to be on the losing side as Hull were defeated at Leeds. He made a staggering 40 tackles as well as making 80 metres from 11 carries. Hadley even bagged a try.
Greg Bird (Catalans Dragons)
The 33-year-old is still an NRL standard player. Even though Catalans haven’t performed too well so far, Bird has. He made 130 metres from 15 carries, averaging 8.67 per-drive in their first win of the season against Hull Kingston Rovers. He also made three offloads and assisted a try.
