Wakefield still high in confidence despite loss to Castleford, says Chris Chester

Wakefield coach Chris Chester said the team can hold their heads high after suffering a narrow defeat to neighbours Castleford.

Trinity were 7-0 down at the break, with Tigers’ try coming from Mike McMeeken, while Luke Gale also added a drop-goal.

Ben Jones-Bishop pulled one back for Wakefield on the hour, but Gale kicked two penalty goals to secure an 11-6 win for Castleford at the Mobile Rocket Stadium.

Speaking after the game, Chester said: “There wasn’t much in the two sides.

“It wasn’t a great spectacle because of the weather, but I couldn’t be any prouder of the boys. In the second half, we created opportunities but we didn’t quite execute.

“I was a little bit disappointed with their penalty under the posts (in second half), I will have to have another look at that. He (Kyle Wood) had both feet behind the line and he is making a genuine tackle and we get penalised for it under the posts.

“The second half was a very good performance from us and maybe if we had a little bit of luck and got a couple of calls, it could have been a different story. There is plenty to work on and we go to Hull FC on Monday full of confidence.”

And Wakefield hooker Kyle Wood thought Trinity were unlucky to come away from the game with nothing.

He added: “It was a good game, but we just couldn’t score at the end.

“We gave away too many penalties in the first half and we gave the penalties away at the wrong times in the second half.

“We gave it everything but Castleford had good defence at the end. We were unlucky, we were the better team in the second half, but we just couldn’t get over the line.”
