Round 8: Super League Team of the Week
There were a number of classy displays in round eight of the Betfred Super League on Good Friday.
Ben Barba (St Helens)
The 28-year-old was sensational again on Good Friday. He was a livewire all afternoon as he helped St Helens beat local rivals Wigan Warriors 21-18 in front of a sell-out crowd at the Totally Wicked Stadium. He scored a try and made 156 metres from 16 carries.
Josh Charnley (Warrington Wolves)
The 26-year-old was brilliant in his debut for Warrington Wolves. He scored two tries to help them beat local rivals Widnes Vikings 32-18 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. He made 144 metres from 18 carries and made two clean breaks as well as busting three tackles.
Ash Handley (Leeds Rhinos)
The 22-year-old can’t stop scoring at the minute! Handley was a constant threat for Leeds in their 22-22 draw with Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith’s Stadium on Good Friday. He scored two tries and set up another. He also made 152 metres from 14 carries.
Carlos Tuimavave (Hull FC)
The 26-year-old was quality for Hull FC in their 30-22 win over city rivals Hull Kingston Rovers at the KCOM Craven Park. He came up with a number of classy touches in attack. He made a clean break and grabbed an assist. Tuimavave also made 137 metres from 12 drives, averaging 11.42 metres per-carry.
Fetuli Talanoa (Hull FC)
The 30-year-old scored two tries to help Hull FC beat Hull KR on Good Friday. He made a clean break and bust three tackles. The Tonga international also made 11 carries for his side. Talanoa is currently Super League’s top try scorer.
Danny Richardson (St Helens)
The 21-year-old has been a revelation for St Helens this season and is keeping veteran Matty Smith out of the side. He kicked four goals to help Saints beat Wigan and his organisational skills were second to none. He also made 14 tackles.
Luke Gale (Castleford Tigers)
The 29-year-old kicked Castleford Tigers to an 11-6 victory over neighbours Wakefield Trinity at the Mobile Rocket Stadium on Thursday. It wasn’t the best performance we’ve seen from him, but he held his nerve to add two penalty goals and a drop-goal. He also made 14 tackles.
Lama Tasi (Salford Red Devils)
The 27-year-old put in a solid display on Good Friday to help Salford Red Devils beat Catalans Dragons 32-16 at the AJ Bell Stadium. He made 16 tackles and nine carries. He had a big impact with each drive he made.
James Roby (St Helens)
The 32-year-old is, arguably, the most consistent and reliable player of the Super League era. He made a staggering 48 tackles on Good Friday, but also did well in attack. He made 98 metres from eight carries, averaging 12.25 metres per-drive. Roby also came up with an assist.
Joel Tomkins (Wigan Warriors)
The 31-year-old has received a lot of stick from some Wigan fans over the 12 months or so, but he has been one of the best forwards in the competition this season. He scored two tries in their narrow defeat at St Helens, while making 24 tackles and seven carries.
Sam Hewitt (Huddersfield Giants)
The 19-year-old was only promoted to the first-team three weeks ago and he made his debut in Huddersfield’s 22-22 draw with Leeds on Good Friday. He made 29 tackles and six carries, a solid effort for a back-rower on debut.
Oliver Holmes (Castleford Tigers)
The 25-year-old covered every blade of grass in Castleford’s win at Wakefield. He made 29 tackles, with nine of those being from marker position. Holmes also took in 18 drives and worked hard for his side all game.
Ben Westwood (Warrington Wolves)
The 36-year-old has been in fine form this term. He was a workhorse in Warrington’s win over Widnes. He made 26 tackles as well as taking in 16 drives. Westwood even bagged a try which is a bonus for any forward.
