Five photos with a story from Easter weekend

Every photo has a story, but we’ve picked out five from the weekend.

Daryl Powell peering out of a window at Wakefield was bettered by Castleford themselves on Monday in a water splash clash with Warrington, that the Wolves won 18-6. With two games lost to the weather already, the Tigers were desperate to get the game on and they did so despite the treacherous conditions that ultimately suited Warrington better.

St Helens sit at the top of the Super League table after a double win over Easter against arch rivals Wigan and fellow local rivals Widnes. This man, Ben Barba, will take some stopping from being the Man of Steel this year and his presence has Saints as favourites to sweep the silverware on offer.

The play of the weekend went to Hull’s Marc Sneyd and his magnificent drop goal from inside his own half that won the game against Wakefield, 27-26. That meant an Easter double for Hull – joining St Helens, Warrington and Wigan in achieving the feat. There were double losses for Hull KR, Wakefield and Widnes.

Another Hull reference (sorry Rovers fans) but the sending off of Bureta Faraimo kick-started the Good Friday drama. Although the Airlie Birds rallied with 12 men for the majority of the match to win, it was another example of a decision seemingly influenced by the video referee. We saw Luke Douglas sin binned following a similar intervention against Widnes on Monday too. Getting the right decision is one thing, but the inconsistency between games on/off the TV is another.

Although Widnes lost both their games over the Easter weekend, their new Papua New Guinean faithful had something to cheer as big prop Wellington Albert crashed over for his first Widnes and Super League try – with his very first touch of the ball after coming on against St Helens on Monday. He had sat out Widnes’ last two games, having been sent off within a minute of coming on in their home game against Huddersfield in March.
