League 1 Round-up: Doncaster go top as Workington beat Bradford
Doncaster sit top of League 1 after five games after Bradford suffered their first defeat of the season.
Following a controversial build-up to the game over a dispute regarding live streaming, Bradford legend Leon Pryce got one over his former club by leading his Workington side to their best win under his brief tenure so far.
The Cumbrians levelled things up four minutes from the end when Jordan Tansey converted Elliot Miller’s try.
And Tansey stepped up two minutes later to score the decisive one-pointer and condemn the Bulls to defeat.
Workington had led 10-2 in the first half, thanks to three Tansey goals and a Caine Barnes try, but the Bulls fought back to level things up at the break despite having Dane Chisholm in the sin bin.
Jake Butler-Fleming, a recent signing from Toronto Wolfpack, gave them the lead on 54 minutes before Town’s late show.
It means Doncaster leapfrog the Bulls to go top of the table on points difference after they registered a hard-fought 28-20 win over North Wales Crusaders at the Keepmoat Stadium.
The visitors, under new coach Anthony Murray, held a surprise 8-6 lead at the break after Jordan Case’s try and Tommy Johnson’s conversion and then a penalty on 37 minutes.
The Dons got off to a perfect start in the second half through a Connor Scott try on 42 minutes and Jason Tali’s four-pointer on 48 minutes gave the hosts breathing space.
Case’s second, converted by Johnson, brought North Wales back within two but that would ultimately be the closest they would get again.
Hakim Miloudi’s kick for Richard Owen, plus conversion, restored the eight point deficit and back-rower Brad England virtually made the game safe 14 minutes from time, despite Kenny Baker’s late try.
York continued their fine start to the season with a 26-16 win away at Newcastle.
Tries from Andy Ellis and Joe Batchelor helped them to a 14-6 half time lead at Kingston Park in another toe to toe contest, as Newcastle hit back through Jake Normington only for Judah Mazive to restore the deficit two minutes later.
Kieren Moss would secure the win for the City Knights before a late consolation for Evan Simons.
Oldham fell to their third defeat in five games as they were beaten 24-16 at home by Hunslet, who in turn picked up their third victory.
Oldham led 6-0 at the break through Dave Hewitt’s converted try and doubled that advantage in the second half before Hunslet mounted a comeback.
Keighley ran in 14 tries as they hammered Hemel 80-10 at Cougar Park.
There were 10 different try scorers for the Cougars as the Stags remain winless this season.
Whitehaven built on the momentum of their dramatic derby victory over Workington with a routine 44-12 win at Coventry.
Player-coach Carl Forster crossed for two tries as they turned an 18-0 half-time lead in to a comfortable victory.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, whipping boys West Wales Raiders were thumped 76-8 by London Skolars at New River Stadium.
Former Bradford winger Vinny Finigan scored a hat-trick, while Neil Thorman scored 12 goals.
