Round 11: Super League Team of the Week
Wakefield and Castleford players dominate the team of the week from round 11 of the Betfred Super League.
Ashton Golding (Leeds Rhinos)
The 21-year-old was unlucky to be on the losing side in Leeds Rhinos’ 9-8 defeat to Wigan Warriors on Friday night. Golding made 19 carries for his side and bust a tackle. The Jamaica international is going well for the Rhinos at the moment.
Jake Bibby (Salford Red Devils)
The 21-year-old has been a bit of an unsung hero for Salford Red Devils this season due to his impressive performances on the wing. He scored two tries to help the Red Devils beat Huddersfield Giants 30-12 at the John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday.
Reece Lyne (Wakefield Trinity)
The 25-year-old proved exactly why he was selected for Paul Anderson’s England Knights squad in Wakefield Trinity’s 24-20 win over St Helens on Sunday. He scored a try as well as making 24 tackles and 14 carries. Lyne also made a clean break and bust four tackles.
Josh Griffin (Hull FC)
The 27-year-old has openly spoken of his desire of gaining an England call-up and if he keeps performing like he did on Thursday, he will be no doubt earn a cap. Griffin scored two tries for Hull FC in their 39-20 win at Widnes Vikings, while also making 228 metres from 14 carries, averaging 16.29 metres per-drive.
Bill Tupou (Wakefield Trinity)
The 27-year-old has, arguably, been Wakefield’s best player so far this season. He played a big part in Trinity’s win over Saints. Tupou scored a try as well as making a staggering 218 metres from 16 drives. He made three clean breaks and bust nine tackles, too.
Albert Kelly (Hull FC)
The 27-year-old ran the show in Hull FC’s win at Widnes. He is certainly an early contender for the Steve Prescott Man of Steel award this year. Kelly came up with an assist, made 27 tackles and made 122 metres from nine carries. He terrorised Widnes’ defence.
Luke Gale (Castleford Tigers)
The 29-year-old bossed Castleford Tigers around the park in their 41-0 demolition of Catalans Dragons. He set up three tries in the first half and made 11 attacking kicks. Gale also came up with 18 tackles in defence.
Luke Thompson (St Helens)
If you were wondering why St Helens fans are saying Thompson is the ‘next James Graham’ then all is now explained following his solid display in their defeat at Wakefield. The 22-year-old didn’t deserve to lose after making 32 tackles and 17 carries. He had an average gain of eight metres per-drive.
Paul McShane (Castleford Tigers)
The 28-year-old put in a perfect performance against Catalans. He bagged a brace as well as making a whopping 38 tackles. McShane made two clean breaks while busting three tackles. Like Griffin, McShane has a good chance of edging his way into the England squad if he keeps up his remarkable form.
Anthony England (Wakefield Trinity)
The 31-year-old was excellent when he came off the bench against Saints. He instantly made an impact, making 34 tackles and taking 17 drives in, a solid effort for a big front-rower. England also bust a tackle.
Oliver Holmes (Castleford Tigers)
The 25-year-old has been on fire for Castleford Tigers this season. He was instrumental in their victory over the Dragons. He made 33 tackles and took 17 drives in, but Holmes also scored two tries, a rarity for a forward these days.
Willie Isa (Wigan Warriors)
The 29-year-old had one of his best ever games in a Wigan Warriors shirt on Friday night as they beat Leeds Rhinos 9-8 at Emerald Headingley. He made a very impressive 45 tackles in the back-row and made 146 metres out of 16 carries, averaging 9.13 metres per-drive. The Samoa star didn’t put a foot wrong all game.
John Bateman (Wigan Warriors)
The 24-year-old actually played at centre in Wigan’s win over Leeds, but there were too many great centres last week that we’ve had to put him in at loose forward! Bateman was top drawer for the Warriors. The England star made 34 tackles and took in 27 drives, a very good effort. He even bust seven tackles and made five offloads.
