Tries aplenty for Super League duo in Challenge Cup
Warrington and Widnes ran in 27 tries between them as both saw off League One opponents in the Challenge Cup on Saturday.
Widnes scored 17 tries as they thrashed Coventry Bears 90-0 at the Halton Stadium to record a club record victory.
Rhys Hanbury and the returning Patrick Ah Van both scored hat-tricks, and Danny Craven notched four tries.
Lloyd White also scored on his return from injury, while Papua New Guinea prop Stanton Albert was handed his Vikings debut.
Meanwhile, Warrington recorded their seventh successive victory as they eased past Bradford 54-6 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Kevin Brown was rested for the fifth-round tie, with Declan Patton partnering Tyrone Roberts in the halves. Morgan Smith also started at dummy-half, whilst Pat Moran would make his debut from the bench after spending time on dual-registration with Championship side Rochdale Hornets.
The visitors started with plenty of energy, and stand-in captain Steve Crossley was held up minutes in. But it was the opposing captain who opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Chris Hill crashing under the posts following a quick-fire pass from Morgan Smith.
The Wolves then made it look simple, with Bryson Goodwin creating a two-on-one to break Mitch Brown free. The following play saw Ben Currie find a space in the disrupted defensive line to extend the lead to 10-0.
On the restart, the Wolves were awarded a penalty and they took this advantage as Goodwin did it all himself, beating three defenders to crash over the line. Ben Currie then made it a quick first-half double, with Goodwin breaking down the wing to set up the England forward.
Josh Charnley was next, as his acrobatic finish in the corner saw him claim his fourth try in Wire colours. Bradford with little ball and their defensive efforts were not enough to stop Steve Price’s side.
Pat Moran entered the field to make his first Warrington appearance, and his presence was felt as Charnley also made it a first-half double, following a break down the middle from Harvey Livett as Warrington led 30-0 at the break.
Josh Charnley made it a hat-trick early in the second half and claimed his fourth after a beautiful flick from centre Ryan Atkins to make it 42-0.
Goodwin was next in line to claim the double, before making it a hat-trick inside six minutes. The latter seeing him run 60m following an interception from Livett, who fed the former NRL player down the wing to make it 54-0.
Joe Keyes scored a consolation try in the 76th minute for the Bulls, much to the delight of their fans who didn’t fade away in voice throughout the game.
The other six fifth round ties take place on Sunday afternoon, with York’s clash against Catalan Dragons to be shown live via the BBC Sport website.
