Challenge Cup round-up: Charnley and Craven score four, Toronto scrape through, Whitehaven cause upset
There were some big scorelines in the fifth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, but there were a few nail-biters as well.
Warrington Wolves ran in ten tries to progress through to the sixth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup with a 54-6 victory over Betfred League 1 side Bradford Bulls at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday. Josh Charnley scored four tries to help him pass the 1,000-career points milestone, while Bryson Goodwin finished with a personal tally of 20 points as he scored a hat-trick and kicked four goals.
League 1 side Whitehaven caused a little bit of an upset by thrashing Championship team Rochdale Hornets 38-0 at the Recreation Ground on Sunday. Scotland star Callum Phillips was excellent for Haven, scoring two tries as well as setting a few up.
Widnes Vikings won in style and broke a club record for their biggest ever victory on Saturday. They scored 17 tries to demolish Coventry Bears 90-0 at the Halton Stadium. Danny Craven crossed for four tries, while Rhys Hanbury and Patrick Ah Van claimed hat-tricks.
Featherstone Rovers survived a scare by edging past League 1 leaders Doncaster 26-16. The Rovers were 16-10 down at one stage, but a brace from Luke Briscoe helped them go through to the next round.
Adam Quinlan scored a hat-trick as Hull Kingston Rovers eased to a 32-0 victory over League 1 outfit Oldham. The Rovers were always on the front and it was a comfortable win in the end.
A length of the field try from Nick Rawsthorne was the only thing to separate Toronto Wolfpack and Barrow Raiders on Sunday. Gareth O’Brien put in a classy performance at Craven Park, while Rawsthorne scored the winning try in the second half to secure Toronto a place in the next round following a 16-12 win.
Catalans Dragons pulled away from York City Knights late on to claim a spot in the next round with a 34-22 victory. The Knights did a great job in marketing the game and there were 3,081 people watching on the terraces at Bootham Crescent.
Leigh Centurions comfortably beat Championship rivals London Broncos 40-0 to claim their seventh win on the spin and progress through to the sixth round. Ben Reynolds put in a man of the match display, while Ben Crooks crossed for two tries. Ryan Bailey made his debut for the Centurions.
