Five things we learned: West Wales need help, never back against Wigan, Giant task for Woolford
All three tiers have provided us with some brilliant stories over the weekend.
West Wales need help
York City Knights demolished West Wales Raiders 144-0 on Sunday to set a new world record for the biggest win in the professional game.
They haven’t won a game in League 1 this season, so it is quite obvious that they need help, whether that be from the RFL or sponsors. The Welsh club have taken a lot of stick from people on social media, but let’s get behind a club who are doing all that they can to make rugby league a thing in Wales. Let’s hope the club can keep afloat, get out of the rut and maybe get a couple of wins together before the end of the season.
Never back against Wigan
The saying usually goes ‘never write off the Saints’ and that is quite true, but you should never back against Wigan Warriors either. Widnes fans will certainly know not to in future.
The Warriors came from being 18-4 down at half time to secure a 32-24 win against the Vikings on Friday night. Wigan’s team have a brilliant attitude and that ‘don’t stop until the fat lady sings’ mentality. Shaun Wane deserves a lot of credit for instilling that desire into the club.
Warrington looking likely to make top four
Warrington Wolves are certainly hitting their straps at the moment and you feel like their best is still yet to come. They eased past strugglers Huddersfield Giants 38-4 on Friday and Josh Charnley scored a hat-trick to take his tally to 10 tries in six games for Warrington since his return to rugby league.
Steve Price’s Wolves have won their last eight games, which were against Huddersfield, Bradford Bulls, Hull Kingston Rovers, Salford Red Devils, Castleford Tigers, Widnes Vikings, Wakefield Trinity and Catalans Dragons. They are currently third in the Super League table and each week they look more and more comfortable there.
Giant task ahead for Woolford
Huddersfield Giants have appointed Australian Simon Woolford as their new head coach until the end of the 2020 season, but he faces a huge task at the John Smith’s Stadium.
They have not won any of their last eight games and they are conceding a lot of points, even against bottom four rivals, too. They have conceded 104 points in their last two games, scoring just eight. It is looking like they are heading for the Qualifiers.
Hats off to Swinton for good marketing
Swinton Lions attracted a crowd of 2,155 to Heywood Road for their Championship clash against Toulouse Olympique on Saturday.
They opened the gates up and declared that it was free entry to the game in a bid to gain more regular supporters and even if 10 spectators only become regulars, it will pay off in the long run. They lost 62-8 to promotion hopefuls Toulouse though. Swinton’s marketing and media team do a brilliant job and a lot of praise must go to them.
It was a better crowd than the London Broncos v Dewsbury Rams (733) and Rochdale Hornets v Sheffield Eagles (459) games put together, so fair play to the Lions.
