Former Hull FC and Featherstone star Charlie Stone passes away

Former Hull FC, Featherstone Rovers and Great Britain forward Charlie Stone has passed away at the age of 67.

Stone started his career in the back-row at Featherstone Rovers in the 1970/71 season and stayed there until 1978.

He helped Featherstone win the 1973 Challenge Cup Final at Wembley and was on the losing side in the final the following year. Stone scored 28 tries in 261 games for Featherstone.

Stone then joined Hull and made his debut in a Yorkshire Cup tie at Bramley in August 1978. By the end of that season, he was selected to tour Australasia with the British Lions squad.

Although he didn’t make the Test team, he played in 12 tour games for Great Britain.

He played at Wembley for Hull in their 1980 Challenge Cup final defeat to Hull Kingston Rovers and again in the drawn final with Widnes in 1982 as well as their victory in the replay at Elland Road.

Stone scored eight tries for Hull in 188 games. He also won the Yorkshire Cup and League Championship with the Black and Whites.

He then returned to Featherstone and finished his career in 1986 at Bradford Northern, who he played for 29 times.

Stone was inducted into Featherstone’s Hall of Fame in 2015 for his outstanding performances in Rovers’ colours.
