Six Tackles: Best Magic Weekend kits
There have been many special edition Magic Weekend shirts over the years, but we have picked out the best six…
Wakefield Trinity 2017 (Super Trinity)
Wakefield Trinity produced one of the best Marvel-themed shirts last year in Newcastle, linking with your friendly-neighbourhood superhero. Liam Finn (above) perfectly modelled this shirt, and is a great credit to the design team. Unfortunately, fans haven’t had the same reaction to this year’s attempt. However, Chris Chester’s side new spider-sense worked, beating Widnes Vikings 34-12 in 2017.
Hull FC 2017 (Hulk FC)
Hull FC thought bigger and stronger than any other hero and followed in Marvel’s Hulks footsteps, creating this green and white shirt for their clash against St Helens. What’s big, green and scary? Probably Lee Radford following their heavy 45-0 defeat on the Saturday in front of the St James’ Park crowd. The side have now changed to Black Panther this season, which came very close to this list.
Widnes Vikings 2015 (Widnes United)
Denis Betts’ side produced the best rugby-football mixes in history, inspired by hosting city Newcastle’s football club, who now feature in the Premier League, for this beautiful shirt. Widnes also gained the two-points in the debut year up north, defeating Salford 38-16. Not quite a football score.
Salford Red Devils 2018 (Salford Yellow Bees)
Inspired by Manchester Bee, representing ‘hard-working past, during the Industrial Revolution,’ Salford are leading the way with best kits ahead of this year’s weekend. Ian Watson’s side are also winning the vote being held on Super League’s official account. They will be hoping the team can back-up the energetic look with a win over Catalans Dragons on the opening game of the Sunday.
St Helens (Autism awareness)
No pun required for Saints, as their great Magic Weekend shirt is in aid of charity Autism Support Charity (SAS) and is the club’s third annual kit supporting the campaign. Each shirt carries the logo of St Helens Autism Support, while 10% of net profit from each shirt will be donated to the local group; players’ shirts will also be auctioned off for the same cause. The league-leaders will face Widnes at St James’ Park on Saturday (3pm).
Catalans Dragons (Iron-Dragons)
This Catalans’ kit from 2017 has to be one of the cleanest the weekend has seen, as they took to Marvel’s Iron Man for inspiration. The Robert Downey JR hero has become an obvious leader amongst the world-famous Avengers in recent times…but this wasn’t the case for the French side. The Dragons were caught short as opponents Huddersfield Giants completed a comeback to claim the two points in a 18-10 victory.
