Super League round-up: Huddersfield beat Wigan, two draws, McGuire inspires Hull KR
There were a number of tight affairs in Round 21 of Super League.
Huddersfield Giants kept their top-eight hopes well and truly alive with a remarkable 20-12 victory over Wigan Warriors at the John Smith’s Stadium. Darnell McIntosh scored two tries for the Giants and picked up the man of the match award.
Catalans Dragons took a step closer to securing their Super League status for next year after drawing 22-22 at Warrington. Stefan Ratchford put in a reliable display for the Wolves and caused Catalans plenty of problems when he had the ball in hand.
Current Super League champions Leeds Rhinos could be in a relegation scrap next month after being held to a 20-20 draw to Wakefield Trinity at Emerald Headingley. It was Kevin Sinfield’s first time back at the Rhinos. Leeds full-back Jack Walker was superb though.
St Helens moved eight points clear at the top of Super League following a fine 34-18 win against Hull FC at the KCOM Stadium. Ben Barba and Jonny Lomax both scored two tries each for Saints.
Salford Red Devils will be forced to compete in the Qualifiers this year after losing 24-6 to Castleford Tigers at the AJ Bell Stadium. Jake Webster was solid for Castleford all game and bagged a brace.
Danny McGuire put in a controlled performance to inspire Hull Kingston Rovers to a 26-24 victory over bottom-placed Widnes Vikings. The Rovers must win their last two games of the regular season and rely on other results going their way to make the top-eight though. The Vikings have lost their last 14 Super League games.
St Helens, Wigan, Castleford and Warrington occupy the top four sports in the Super League table, while Leeds, Hull KR, Salford and Widnes are in the bottom four.
