Super 8s & Qualifiers round-up: Warrington secure semis spot, Salford edge Toronto, London impress in expansion clash
There were a couple of crucial results in The Qualifiers and Super 8s on the weekend.
Bryson Goodwin scored two tries to help Warrington Wolves secure their place in the top four thanks to a nail-biting 26-24 win over Huddersfield Giants at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. The result now sees the Wolves sit eight points above fifth-placed Huddersfield with just three games left, making it impossible for them to be caught.
Wigan Warriors won their fifth Super League game on the spin with a 25-10 victory over Wakefield Trinity at the DW Stadium. Oliver Gildart, Sam Powell, Morgan Escare and Joe Greenwood scored tries for the Warriors.
Castleford Tigers comfortably beat Hull FC 28-8 at the KCOM Stadium to keep their slim hopes of securing a home semi-final alive. Greg Eden scored two tries for the Tigers, while Hakim Miloudi scored from a stunning solo effort for FC.
Salford Red Devils edged closer to retaining their Super League status, despite having two plays sent off in a hard-fought 28-16 win over Toronto Wolfpack at the AJ Bell Stadium. Luke Burgess and Jackson Hastings were both red-carded in the second half for high tackles, but the Wolfpack trailed 20-0 at half-time and it proved too big of a score. Salford forward Lama Tasi was also sin-binned in the first half.
St Helens took a step closer to clinching the League Leaders’ Shield with a 26-22 win against Catalans Dragons in Perpignan. Catalans led 22-14 at one stage, before Jonny Lomax and Morgan Knowles scored in the final 10 minutes to seal the two points for Saints.
Four first half tries from Craig Hall helped Hull Kingston Rovers ease past Halifax 38-24 at the KCOM Craven Park. Tim Sheens’ Rovers have now won three from four games in The Qualifiers. They are certainly on course to securing safety.
Leeds Rhinos beat Widnes Vikings 16-6 in a scrappy affair at the Halton Stadium on Sunday. The Rhinos are now on course to avoiding the drop, but the Vikings are going in the opposite direction, having lost four out of four games in The Qualifiers.
London Broncos pulled off a huge crucial result as they ran-out 34-8 winners against Toulouse Olympique in the capital. Scotland international Alex Walker scored two tries for the Broncos, while James Cunningham, Kieran Dixon and Ben Hellewell.
