Kevin Sinfield backs David Furner to succeed at Leeds

Leeds director of rugby Kevin Sinfield thinks David Furner is a good fit for the Rhinos.

On Saturday, it was announced that South Sydney Rabbitohs assistant coach Dave Furner would become Leeds’ head coach for the 2019 season on a three-year deal.

Furner spent to seasons at the Rhinos in 2003 and 2004, before hanging up his playing boots.

And Sinfield thinks the appointment of Furner is a strong one.

He said: “What makes it attractive is the influence he had here all them years ago in 2003 and 2004.

“He played a huge part in helping some of the players at the time. It is pretty clear we need a bit of a rebuild here and there is no better coach that I want to bring than a coach with quality ability.

“Jimmy Lowes has done a fantastic job for us and will continuing doing that along with Chev (Walker) and Rob (Burrow). We are really happy with where we are heading.

“I wouldn’t say he will take pressure off me in terms of the performances and results but it actually allows me to work on the job I came in to do which is great.

“Although part of me has really enjoyed being on the field and helping Jimmy, that will still continue albeit my influence I have there will do. I will be able to do the job I came in to do which is the rugby operations.”

Leeds, the current Super League champions, find themselves competing in The Qualifiers this season but Sinfield insists the club are taking steps in the right direction.

He added: “There are so many good things going on at the minute that are being overshadowed by performances and the results.

“We are going into a real testing patch but this club always responds well and once we get through this period then I am sure we will have some good times ahead.”
