Greg Inglis banned for two Tests and loses Australia captaincy

Greg Inglis has been banned for two Test matches and has been stripped of the captaincy role for Australia after being caught drink driving.

The newly appointed Kangaroos skipper apologised for letting down those who see him as a role model after being charged with drink driving on Monday.

Sydney Roosters skipper Boyd Cordner will now take on the captaincy role for Australia’s upcoming Tests against New Zealand and Tonga, while Inglis’ Rabbitohs team-mate Dane Gagai will replace him in the squad.

Inglis was pulled over for speeding on Monday and returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.085 after drinking the night before.

The South Sydney centre had hours earlier been named as captain of the Kangaroos for their Tests against the Kiwis and the Mate Ma’a this autumn, but he will now miss those games.

Inglis said: “I know I did the wrong thing and, while I am disappointed at missing the tour, I accept the penalty.”

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg added: “Greg is not just a great player, he is one of our best role models, but he made a poor decision on this occasion.

“He deserves full credit for being upfront today by apologising and taking full ownership of his mistake.

“It is a mark of the man that he has accepted responsibility for his actions and I have no doubt he will overcome this setback and retain his status as a true leader in our game.”
