Hull KR snap up Leeds forward Mitch Garbutt
Hull KR have pulled off a major coup in signing Mitch Garbutt from Leeds on a three-year deal.
The 29-year-old will remain at the KCOM Craven Park until at least the end of the 2021 season and becomes KR’s fourth signing for 2019 following the acquisitions of Jimmy Keinhorst, Weller Hauraki and Ryan Lannon.
Garbutt won two Super League Grand Finals with the Rhinos and was part of their treble-winning side back in 2016, when they defeated Rovers in the Challenge Cup final.
On joining Rovers, Garbutt said: “Everyone’s been welcoming, it was a good first hit out and there’s some characters and some really good people in the team.
“The opportunity came up to leave Leeds, I had a chat with a few people and then met with Tim [Sheens] and he was really good. He was really straight forward with what he wanted and I think I’ll fit in really well here.
“I’m looking forward to the first game, I think the derby is really exciting. I’ve always enjoyed playing against both Hull sides.
“I’m really looking forward to being a part of that derby, it’s got such a big history – and obviously I’m looking forward to the East Stand maybe cheering for me and not yelling abuse at me.”
Hull KR coach Tim Sheens commented: “Mitch brings a wealth of experience to our team and joins what is now an impressive and experienced front-row including Robbie Mulhern, Lee Jewitt, Mose Masoe and Nick Scruton.
“When a player of Mitch’s ability becomes available it’s important to move quickly to tie them down and we’re delighted we’ve been able to secure his services until 2021.”
