Adrian Lam ‘rattled’ by Wigan’s lack of confidence

Wigan coach Adrian Lam admitted his side look like a shell of their former selves at the moment.

The Warriors lost their fourth game in a row on Friday night as they fell short to a 14-6 defeat to Huddersfield Giants at the DW Stadium.

Wigan sit joint bottom of the Super League table after winning just one game out of six competitive fixtures in 2019, with their only victory coming against Leeds Rhinos.

Speaking after the game, Lam said: “I’m a bit rattled really because they looked like a shell of their former selves.

“We are training well but we just can’t put the finger on it at the moment. They are playing without confidence. They look like they have no confidence.

“The preparation has been great even their attitude has been great until they take to the field. Maybe it is an attitude that we think we deserve to win without having the effort that comes with it.

“They are emotionally drained from the [Sydney] Roosters game, there is no doubt about that, but we are a bit lost at the moment.”

Next up for the reigning Super League champions is a trip to neighbours Warrington Wolves on Friday, who have won four games out of five this season.

And Lam admits his side just need to keep persevering with their new attacking gameplan.

He added: “It’s not through a lack of effort but I think it’s just the space between the ears at the moment.

“Everything at training has been outstanding with the way we have prepared, they love the gameplan and want to play the new style, but we don’t play it and I think it was with seven minutes to go against Huddersfield until we started playing some of the rugby we have trained.

“It’s down to individuals and it’s about taking a collective look at ourselves. It would be more of a concern if we were distant from each other at training and if we didn’t train well, but there are no signs at all of it going wrong.

“The players can’t put a finger on it at the moment. All we can do to fix it is to stay focused with our preparation and make sure everyone is on board.”

Lam confirmed Dom Manfredi (teeth) is a doubt for Wigan’s trip to Warrington, while Liam Marshall will go for scans after sustaining a knee injury.
