Anthony Gelling to stand trial next month after assault charge

Warrington centre Anthony Gelling will stand trial next month after pleading not guilty to grievous bodily harm.

Gelling, 29, was arrested in February and appeared at Warrington Magistrates Court today to face the charge, which he denied and was released on bail.

The Cook Islands international was stood down from selection by the Wolves following the incident, which left his girlfriend hospitalised with ‘serious’ injuries, including a fractured eye socket.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “Detectives have charged a 29-year-old man with grievous bodily harm.

“Anthony Gelling, of Cronton Lane Mews in Widnes, appeared at Warrington Magistrates Court today, Tuesday.

“The charge relates to an incident at an address on Cronton Lane Mews in Widnes on Thursday, February 6, and subsequently reported to police on Saturday, February 8.”

He will now appear at Liverpool Crown Court next month.

Gelling had returned to action prior to lockdown, scoring in Warrington’s last match against Hull.

The former Wigan man had only joined the Wolves in the off-season from local rivals Widnes.
