Ashley Gibson joins Newcastle
Newcastle Thunder have announced the signing of experienced centre Ashely Gibson for the 2020 Betfred League One season, whilst Mikey Wood also makes the move from Bradford Bulls.
Gibson has previously played for Leeds, Salford, Castleford and Wakefield and has made over 150 Super League appearances. He made the move to Bradford midway through the 2017 season, helping them towards promotion from League One to the Championship in 2018.
He made just four appearances in 2019 for the Bulls due to injury.
“I got a call of my agent to say Simon and Denis had been in touch and I really wanted to come up,” he said.
“I’ve known about the club for a while and I played for Bradford on the Friday night before the Magic Weekend and it was a real good atmosphere.
“It seemed like the club has a really good fan base and hopefully this year, I can do something good.”
Joining his teammate, Wood also makes the move from Bradford for the 2020 season.
Wood, 22, played 13 games for Thunder whilst on-loan from Huddersfield Giants in 2016 and 2017 and made 24 appearances in 2019.
“I loved it here when I was on loan,” said Wood.
“I remember the fans and how loud they were and they used to travel everywhere to watch and all of the lads were sound and made it a right time. That is one of the main reasons I came back up and signed because it is a good club to be at.”
