Brown knows Widnes must respect Championship sides

Widnes Vikings Captain Kevin Brown says he is excited about the prospect of ‘entering the unknown’ ahead of the Super 8 Qualifiers, which kick off this weekend.

Brown has recovered from the ankle injury which has left him sidelined since June, and takes his side to Halifax on Sunday, looking for a repeat of last year’s 34-10 Cup win.

Hhe believes it is important to show Championship sides respect in order to avoid being on the end of a shock.

“Halifax is a tough start,” he said.

“We went there last year in the Cup and it was a very tough game, but they’re probably an even better side now. We’ve got similar squads and they obviously have a fantastic coach.

“I know a few lads who have worked under (Halifax coach) Richard Marshall and they’ve only got good things to say.

“I think you can sometimes disrespect some sides from different leagues but, for any team to have won nine games on the bounce at any level is outstanding.

“They’re doing extremely well and we’re expecting a real difficult game.”

Brown and the Vikings have set themselves clear goals for this important stage of the season.

“Our goal is to win every game,” he added.

“But we won’t be the only side with that target; I’m sure the likes of Leigh and Bradford will be trying to do the same.

“All the top sides the the Championship are doing well and are in good form. It’s sort of the unknown quantity now, both in the teams we’re playing and the whole concept for us.

“I’m sure there will be shocks between now and the end of the season but we’ve just got to make sure we’re not involved in one.

“The Championship as a whole is a fantastic league and it’s getting better every year, so the next couple of months should be an interesting and exciting time for the sport.”
